As the new semester unfolds, Austin Community College District (ACC) launches its Emergency Preparedness Week from September 9 to 13, according to details released by the college. This initiative is a bid to arm students and faculty with the requisite knowledge to effectively respond to campus emergencies. Dr. Mike Garcia, ACC's Executive Director of Regulatory Affairs, underscored the importance of readiness, "Being prepared for an emergency is essential for everyone on campus. The College is taking new steps to ensure that everyone feels safe and secure while here," ACC Newsroom reported.
To proactively ensure safety, drills have been laid out to take place across the various ACC campuses during the week. Students and staff are encouraged to get ahead by familiarizing themselves with emergency egress plans, including campus exits, alternate routes, and rally points designated for evacuations. This information can be vital in an immediate need to navigate out of harm's way.
Midweek, on Wednesday, September 11, the college will test its Emergency Alert System. It's a pertinent reminder for the college community to verify their contact details for the system to work effectively. The test will initiate warning messages that will populate via text, email, and through auditory and visual cues on campus. ACC Newsroom states, "Emergency message boards and PA speakers around campus also may be activated and a test message will be posted on the ACC website and on the District’s Facebook page."
Preparation for Emergency Preparedness Week doesn't halt at awareness; it's a call to action for all ACC affiliates to brush up on the emergency protocols. The ACC Emergency website houses expansive information on dealing with different types of emergencies. Moreover, getting to learn the ACC's 5 Safety Actions can prime individuals to respond instinctively and appropriately whenever varied emergencies strike. Each action is tailored to urgent circumstances – ranging from 'Hold' measures for in-room safety to 'Shelter' instructions for severe weather scenarios.
ACC continues to prioritize the well-being of its community, laying a foundation of safety and preparedness that continues to extend beyond this focused week. For more in-depth guidance on the College's emergency protocols, resources can be accessed through the ACC Emergency website. With diligent preparation, the hope is that ACC will fortify a campus community that is resilient and responsive to the uncertainties of any crisis.
