Austin's Cherrywood Food Scene Shuffles, New Cocktail Bar Opens as Beloved Cafes Relocate and ReinventSource: Google Street View

Austin's Cherrywood neighborhood is witnessing a significant change in its food and beverage landscape as several local businesses undergo transitions – some closing doors, while others creatively repurpose the spaces. In what could be considered a shuffle of venues, several well-known entities are involved in the reconfiguration of community hotspots.

Teddy's, a new cocktail bar that's gearing up to seriously shake up the scene, is poised to open in October at 2200 Manor Road. This space once housed the popular Thunderbird Coffee before its closure in December 2023. Behind Teddy's are Ryan McElroy, who had opened Thunderbird Coffee back in 2006, his brother Wade McElroy, as well as Russell Victorioso and Paulina Cline, who told Eater Austin that they are aiming to concoct "well-balanced, approachable drinks."

Meanwhile, Progress Coffee + Beer, another Cherrywood mainstay, shut its doors unexpectedly in June due to the expansive I-35 project, cutting short its time in the community. According to an Instagram post captured by Community Impact, the Progress team expressed their regret, stating, "It is tough because we feel like we never really got the chance to get going in this space." However, they remain active, focusing on their Buda location and a presence at the new Cabana Club.

Not to be left out, another foodie revival is set to occur as Spread and Co. plans to launch at a new location after closing its doors earlier this year on 38th Street. This cheese and charcuterie cafe will be occupying the spot that once held Lola's Donuts, bringing their beloved array of cheeses and homemade preserves back into the Cherrywood fold. Founder Rosemary Ewald, along with her husband and chef Austin Ewald, expect to reopen by the end of summer at 2406 Manor Road, Suite B, as per information shared by MySA.
