Concern has been raised in the Bastrop community following the arrest of four middle school students connected to a social media threat targeting Bastrop Middle School. A Bastrop Independent School District spokesperson disclosed to KXAN that the threat, initially deemed as "non-credible," nonetheless led to the detention of the juveniles.

According to the investigation, an image was circulating on social media that falsely included Bastrop Middle School on a list of potential targets. This image had been maliciously altered and appended with threatening messages. The district made clear through a statement by Bastrop Middle School Principal Tiffany Peirson, that the students implicated did not report this deceiving graphic to the authorities and instead perpetuated the false alarm, resulting in their arrest and misdemeanor charges of false alarm/report. "Due to the seriousness of the incident, four of our (BMS) students have been identified and arrested," Peirson said in a letter shared with families.

In light of the events, Bastrop ISD has appealed to the parents within the community to engage in dialogue with their children about the gravity of creating or circulating threats, even if they are meant as pranks. Principal Peirson emphasized, "We take all incidents like this seriously and we are committed to ensuring the safety of all of our students and staff," in a statement obtained by KVUE.

The district's swift response to the incident has sparked a broader conversation about security in schools and the role of social media in shaping perceptions of safety. Bastrop ISD maintains an anonymous tip line on its website, encouraging students and families to report any potential threats directly. The increasing vigilance follows a pattern of rising security measures in response to several reported school threats across Central Texas in recent years.
