A fatal shooting that emerged from an incident of illegal dumping has prompted an update from Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar. An arrest has been made after what started as a call about environmental violations escalated into a violent car chase ending in death. As KSAT reports, the news conference is scheduled for today at 1 p.m., where further details around the arrest will unfold.
Earlier, deputies in Bexar County were called to a car lot off of US 181 near South Presa Street at around 4 p.m. on Wednesday, after reports of an orange Dodge truck dumping trash on the property; the confrontation with the car lot's employees led to a pursuit and exchange of gunfire, which was reported by FOX San Antonio. Witnesses suggest shots were fired between the truck and one of the car lot employees as they drove along US 181.
At a crash site nearby, a 36-year-old man, identified as an employee of the car lot involved in the chase, was found dead in a vehicle, his fate seemingly intertwined with the initial act of illegal dumping. Sheriff Salazar, in his communication with the media, disclosed that it remains uncertain if the man's death was a direct result of the gunfire or the crash, but he confirmed to FOX San Antonio, "there is evidence to suggest he had been firing a handgun from his vehicle."
The pursuit ended in a tragic convolution of metal and mortality, wherein the second employee, a witness to the chase, distanced themselves from the series of events after the crash occurred; the search still continues for the orange truck and its driver, adding a protracted sense of urgency to this already grim narrative.
