California State Senator Marie Alvarado-Gil is under legal scrutiny following a lawsuit filed by a former chief of staff, alleging that she subjected him to sexual harassment. According to court documents obtained by ABC10, Chad Condit, the plaintiff in the case, asserts that Senator Alvarado-Gil pressured him into a sexual relationship, starting in December 2022, after he supported her campaign.
In one of the more extreme allegations, Condit claims that Alvarado-Gil demanded oral sex as a test of loyalty. As described in the 38-page complaint, there were instances where she significantly pressed him to engage in such acts, even leading to physical injury for Condit. He is quoted as saying on ABC10 that on one occasion, the demands of the senator required him to "twist and contort his body" in a small car, which he later learned had caused severe damage to his back, including three herniated discs and a collapsed hip.
The lawsuit also accuses Senator Alvarado-Gil of creating a hostile work environment, allegations of sexual discrimination, and retaliation. Condit's lawyer states that their client was unjustly terminated in December 2023 after refusing to wear a Santa Claus costume during work hours, a requirement that was not extended to other staff members. Soon after, Condit claims he received a text from Alvarado-Gil notifying him of his dismissal.
The senator's attorney, Ognian Gavrilov, has denounced the claims. "A disgruntled former employee has fabricated an outlandish story, presented without evidence, to get a payday. We expect that the senator will be fully cleared of any wrongdoing of these bogus, financially motivated claims," Gavrilov said in a statement to FOX40. This defense comes amid heightened interest due to the senator's recent party change. Alvarado-Gil switched from the Democratic Party to the Republican Party, which adds a political dimension to the unfolding drama.
Observers are keenly watching the fallout of such accusations. Steve Maviglio, a Democratic consultant, emphasized the gravity of the charges in his conversation with ABC10. “They are hair-raising allegations, that is for sure," he said, highlighting the impact this lawsuit could have not only on the senator but also on the California Senate as an institution.
Meanwhile, the Senate officials are taking measured steps regarding the case. According to the Secretary of the Senate, the chamber is "in discussions with counsel to assess the next steps," and while not able to comment on pending litigation, The Senate "takes all complaints incredibly seriously," as mentioned on ABC10.
