In remembrance of the victims of the 9/11 attacks, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has announced a temporary stoppage of all vehicular traffic at the Veterans International Bridge. The pause in traffic will occur on the morning of September 11, during a ceremony to mark the 23rd anniversary of the tragic events. As a result, the traveling public should plan to use alternate border crossings during this time.
For those looking to cross the border, CBP suggests using the Gateway International Bridge or the Brownsville and Matamoros International Bridge, which will continue to facilitate vehicular traffic. "We would like advise the traveling public and community that CBP will continue to process vehicular traffic at the two alternate crossing locations, Gateway International Bridge and the Brownsville and Matamoros International bridge to ensure continuation of traffic flow during the temporary traffic halt at Veterans International Bridge during the remembrance ceremony," said Port Director Tater Ortiz, Port of Brownsville, according to a CBP news release.
On September 11, the CBP will cease traffic at approximately 7:00 a.m. and expects to resume normal operations by 8:00 a.m. Those who need to use the Veterans International Bridge that morning are encouraged to make their crossing before 6:45 a.m. to avoid any disruptions. Additionally, the Los Indios International Bridge stands as another alternate path for those seeking to circumvent traffic congestion.
CBP also stresses the importance of utilizing RFID-equipped travel documents, such as U.S. passport cards and newer versions of the border crossing card and resident alien card. This technology can expedite the process in the Ready Lanes. CBP also encourages travelers to have their entry documents prepared as they approach the booth to facilitate processing. In order to avoid delays or fines due to prohibited or restricted agricultural items, travelers should declare all such items upon arrival, and , before making their journey consult the Know Before You Go guide available through CBP.
Travelers can monitor Border Wait Times through the link provided by CBP or download the BWT app from the Apple App Store or Google Play to check wait times which are updated hourly. For more information regarding the temporary traffic stoppage and crossing options, visit the CBP website.
