The Chapel Hill community has once again faced a potential school violence scare, which, fortunately, turned out to be non-credible after a police investigation. The Chapel Hill Police Department, as reported by CBS 17, confirmed that they are now seeking a juvenile petition to press charges against the minor responsible for making threats against local high schools.
Parents and students experienced an unsettling day as law enforcement heightened their presence around Chapel Hill, East Chapel Hill, and Carrboro high schools. According to WRAL, Jennifer Jackson, a parent to a Carrboro High School student, expressed her concern, saying, "There should not be any doubt in your mind or worry. It's very frustrating," as she grappled with the balance between keeping her children informed and unconcerned. Jackson further emphasized her desire to have been notified earlier, wishing the school would involve parents sooner, "even if they didn't have all of the details."
The increased security measures reflect a troubling trend across the state, following a recent shooting in Georgia that claimed four lives. Chapel Hill police have reiterated their commitment to taking all threats seriously. "Threats against anyone in our community, credible or not, are unacceptable and we must always take them seriously," Police Chief Celisa Lehew stated in a statement shared by Chapelboro.
Ensuring student safety, CHCCS has reportedly taken steps such as the installation of high-definition security cameras and mandating background checks for all visitors, as informed by Superintendent Nyah Hamlett last week. In response to the false alarm, the district thanked the families who swiftly brought the social media post to their attention. In the wake of the threats, the schools' preparedness included standard response protocols and a review of measures for emergencies. While the police confirmed having communicated with the juvenile involved, the suspect's name could not be released due to state laws protecting minors' privacy.
As the police work on the case, community members and parents are asked to remain vigilant. They can report any additional information to the Chapel Hill Police Department at 919-968-2760, or anonymously through Crimestoppers at 919-942-7515 or online. The cooperation between law enforcement, school officials, and community members played a vital role in promptly addressing this incident, according to Chief Lehew. The collective effort stands as a testament to the community's commitment to safety in Chapel Hill's schools.
