A Clinton Township man faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after allegedly fatally shooting his neighbor’s dog, named Buddy. The incident, which took place on August 15, led to the arraignment of Andrae Maurice Jones, 43, on Tuesday.
According to The Detroit News, Jones is charged with third-degree killing or torturing an animal, using a firearm during the commission of a felony, careless discharge of a firearm, and malicious destruction of property. The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office claims that the dog was shot when it came too close to Jones’ property line, though no information has been provided on whether there were previous disputes between Jones and the dog's owners.
During the arraignment in the 41-B District Court, Magistrate Ryan Zemke set Jones' bond at $20,000. Conditions of the bond include having no contact with the dog’s owners and, if he posts bond, being banned from possessing firearms or ammunition. "Under Michigan law, intentionally killing a dog is a four-year felony", shared Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido, as per WWJ Newsradio. Lucido emphasized the emotional impact on the family, saying, "The family is now grieving the loss of a beloved family member."
The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office reiterated the legal stance and the commitment to ensure justice. The office's statement underscored the assurance that Jones will have to face the repercussions of his alleged actions. The next court hearing for Jones is set for September 16. "We will ensure the defendant faces the consequences of his alleged actions," Lucido affirmed, as cited by Macomb County.
