
The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) is currently leading the investigation into an officer-involved shooting that took place on September 14, involving the Fountain Police Department (FPD), according to a recent statement. The incident occurred shortly before 10:00 a.m. when FPD officers responded to a robbery report at the Walgreens located at 7910 Fountain Mesa Road.
The suspect, a male, allegedly threatened employees with a gun and a bomb before fleeing on foot with stolen items toward the Lowe's shopping center. Officers caught up with him in the parking lot of a business in the 7700 block of Fountain Mesa Road, the attempt to apprehend the suspect led to two officers discharging their weapons, each firing at least one round, striking the suspect. The injured suspect was subsequently transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, according to CSPD.
In addition to the suspect, one FPD officer also sustained minor injuries during the incident and was taken to the hospital. The shooting has prompted an investigation, per Colorado Revised Statute 16-2.5-301 which details protocols for incidents involving officer use of deadly force. As part of standard procedure, the officers involved are now on administrative leave in accordance with FPD policy.
