A tragic incident occurred last week at Portage Lakes State Park, where a six-year-old boy, identified as Sebastian Johnson, drowned while on a family outing. According to WKYC, New Franklin's fire department launched a search for the missing child shortly after 2:30 p.m. last Friday upon receiving a distress call. Firefighters, aided by volunteers, banded together to form a human chain to comb the swimming waters of the park in search of Sebastian.
New Franklin's Fire Chief Steve Leslie told WKYC that Sebastian was initially believed not to be in the water. However, the search effort tragically concluded with the discovery of Sebastian submerged. This devastating event marked a sorrowful closure to what was intended to be a family's day out before the end of summer.
In the wake of this unfortunate incident, the local community has rallied to support the grieving family. A fundraiser established by Our Mother’s Hands ministry has raised over $40,000 to assist the family during this time of mourning. Cleveland19 reached out to the ministry, and although they offered only brief remarks, they shared that the family is currently seeking privacy.
The fundraiser page details that Sebastian's mother, who is currently seven months pregnant, had taken her children for one more swim to celebrate the end of summer joyfully. The day at Portage Lakes State Park took a tragic turn when the six-year-old suddenly went missing, as stated in a statement obtained by Cleveland19. The family's loss is deeply felt throughout the community as they gather to provide support during this challenging time.
