A Houston man has been sentenced to 99 years in prison after being convicted for his involvement in two fatal shootings, the Harris County District Attorney's Office has reported. Treveon Mykel Tatum, 23, found himself standing before a jury after a series of events that exhibited a disregard for human life, recounted prosecutors during the trial.

In October 2019, Tatum was involved in the murder of 19-year-old Ondreus Patterson outside the victim's home. He was subsequently arrested and released on a $50,000 bond. It was while out on bond for this crime that Tatum, sporting an ankle monitor as a condition of his release, decided to not only evade but downright flout the court's stipulations through his direct involvement in yet another violent episode—a fatal ambush on Feb. 8, 2022, said prosecutors.

According to a statement obtained by the Harris County District Attorney's Office, during the 2022 incident, Tatum and three associates lured two men to a parking lot where they initiated an attack. The encounter, caught on surveillance footage, showed Tatum firing an assault rifle, leading to one man being injured and another, one of Tatum's own accomplices, fatally wounded.

"No family should ever have to hear that a loved one was gunned down on the street in front of their own home," said District Attorney Kim Ogg. The sentiment echoed throughout the courtroom as jurors were presented with the harrowing evidence of Tatum's actions. Assistant District Attorneys Phillip White and Matthew Magill, who prosecuted the case, emphasized the jury's recognition of the danger Tatum posed to the community. "He has shown by his actions that he can't abide by any rules, including court-ordered rules, so no one is safe," White stated. The trial led to Tatum's conviction and an extensive prison sentence, as per the same news release.

The legal repercussions for Tatum are substantial, with a minimum of 30 years to be served before he becomes eligible for parole.
