On Tuesday, the shooter, David Morales, received a sentence of 37 years and 4 months in state prison. The outcome is the culmination of legal proceedings following the event that transpired just after midnight on March 25, 2023, where Morales, amidst a large gathering, fired 10 bullets, according to a report from the Sonoma County District Attorney's Office.
The DA's announcement details that Morales pled no contest to charges of voluntary manslaughter with a firearm enhancement for killing 20-year-old Raul Ramirez-Reyes and attempted murder with a firearm and great bodily injury enhancements for wounding 20-year-old Brian Garcia. "The loss of life and violence in this case were utterly senseless and tragic", District Attorney Rodriguez said, as per the Sonoma County District Attorney's Office. "We believe the sentence today holds Mr. Morales accountable for his actions and is in the interest of justice."
The incident, which left a young man dead and another grappling with the aftermath of his wounds, arose from a confrontation between two groups. After a fistfight ceased at the rural warehouse party scene, Morales returned and used a firearm against Ramirez-Reyes and Garcia. The resulting investigation by Sonoma County sheriff’s deputies leaned heavily on eyewitness statements to identify Morales as the assailant.
In the courtroom, dozens of the victim’s family members and friends attended the sentencing hearing, wherein Judge Robert LaForge handed down the substantial prison term to Morales. Deputy District Attorney Christina Stevens managed the prosecution.
