A Denver man has been sentenced to a period of 164 years to life in prison after a conviction on multiple counts of sexual assault on a child, which the Denver District Attorney's Office stated occurred over five years. Dion Neal, the man in question, was found guilty in June of nine counts of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust, establishing a consistent pattern of abuse against his stepdaughter.
The abuse began in 2017 when the victim was just six years old and continued until 2022. Denver District Attorney Beth McCann expressed her satisfaction with the sentence delivered by Judge Christopher Baumann. DA McCann said, as per the Denver District Attorney's Office, "I am very pleased with the sentence imposed by Judge Bauman, which should ensure that Mr. Neal will never again be able to harm a young child." McCann also acknowledged the courage of the victim in coming forward and providing testimony against Neal.
The long-term effects of the abuse are not only physical but also emotional, resulting in trauma that the young victim will need to work through over time. The Denver DA highlighted the victim's bravery, stating, "My heart breaks for the victim of these heinous crimes and I hope that, over time, she is able to heal from the terrible trauma she suffered, " as noted by the Denver District Attorney's Office.
Denoting the collective effort that led to the conviction, McCann thanked the legal and enforcement teams involved. "I want to thank the prosecutors, investigators and victim advocates from my office, as well as the detectives with the Denver Police Department, whose outstanding work resulted in the successful resolution of this case," she said, as stated by the Denver District Attorney's Office. The case outcome is a direct result of the collaboration between the Denver District Attorney's Office, victim advocates, and the Denver Police Department, ensuring that Neal faces the consequences of his actions.
