In a recent pivot for safety, Eastern Market Corporation has called off the traditional tailgating festivities that were slated to happen before the Detroit Lions' upcoming home game against the Seattle Seahawks on September 30. The decision comes as a direct response to the fatal shooting that occurred at Shed 6 on a previous game day, which left two Detroit locals dead. As reported by WXYZ, the organization stated it's working closely with Detroit Police Department to ensure future events will have requisite safety measures.

In a move aimed to pay respects to the victims and their families, the decision to temporarily halt the celebrated tailgating event was made. "Out of respect for the victims and their families, we have decided to cancel our tailgating event on Monday, September 30th. We will use the time to work with DPD toward putting necessary safeguards in place," explained Eastern Market Corporation in a statement obtained by WXYZ. Additionally, the organization is rapidly working to establish the venue as a weapon-free zone.

The tragic incident that took place after the Lions' game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers involved Jalen Welch, 25, and Rayshawn Bryant, 40, who were fatally shot during an altercation. Following the incident, the Eastern Market Corp. expressed their shock as it was reportedly the first instance of gun violence in its 133-year history. They conveyed their sympathies to those affected by the violence and are resolute on maintaining a safe environment within the market premises.

Tailgating is expected to make a return after the September 30 pause, with the Lions' next home game happening on Oct. 27 against the Tennessee Titans. "Following the pause on September 30th, we intend to resume the tailgating tradition for the remainder of the season after enacting additional and significant security protocols that will be communicated to the public in advance," the Eastern Market Corporation mentioned, as per a statement posted to social media cited by Audacy. These new measures are poised to include an increased police presence and private security involvement from nearby businesses. Moreover, Detroit's Police Chief James White was quoted, correlating the increase in firearms at public events with a rise in violent incidents.

The suspect, meanwhile, has been taken into custody, although the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has not announced charges at the time of reporting.
