The Durham County Cooperative Extension is reaching out to locals who are passionate about food and community service, launching the new Extension Master Food Volunteer Program. This endeavor seeks to connect individuals through food-related activities and service, enriching the Durham County community.
As reported by Durham County news, the program is open to all—whether a seasoned home cook, a nutrition enthusiast, or someone who enjoys sharing a meal and making connections. Eager volunteers will be equipped with knowledge in food and kitchen safety, nutrition, and food preparation. Interested residents, required to attend an information session, will learn about the program specifics, including commitments expected from them as volunteers and details on how to apply.
Cheralyn Berry, an Extension Agent for Family Education, emphasized the program's goals in a statement, "This is a new and exciting opportunity to serve the Durham County community with culinary and nutrition outreach. The Extension Master Food Volunteer Program is an example of the work the Extension and Durham County Government are doing to fulfill their commitment to developing a just food system that is better for the planet and works to end food insecurity," according to the Durham County.
Information sessions are critical for potential participants, offering them a chance to meet Extension staff, and to get their questions answered. Limited applicants will be selected for the program, set to begin in January 2025. A glimpse at the dates for these sessions are Friday, September 25, and Wednesday, October 30, both from 6:30-7:30 p.m. For more details on the Extension Master Food Volunteer Program and to register for an information session, Leslie McClellan, Durham County Extension Agent, can be contacted at [email protected] or 919-630-8299.
