Durham residents with a vested interest in the future of their city have a fresh opportunity to learn about its planning processes this fall. The Durham Planning Academy opens its doors for the Fall 2024 session, aimed at educating individuals about the nuances of urban planning and how they can actively participate in shaping Durham's development.
Applications are currently being accepted for this free course, which promises to thoroughly explain how planning operates in Durham. It comes as a boon for residents seeking to quickly jumpstart their ability to navigate, and hopefully to influence, the city's growing landscape. The academy is particularly targeting a group of 50 residents, giving them a unique view behind the municipal curtain, and is scheduled for mid-November with sessions designed to engage and inform.
Those selected for the program will be privy to interactive workshops, networking opportunities, and a toolkit of resources dedicated to aiding their understanding and involvement in the planning process. Engagement is expected to be high during these sessions, which are facilitated by both planning staff and community experts. Refreshments including dinner, breakfast, and lunch will be served on respective days, likely to foster a convivial atmosphere for learning and discussion.
Hosted by the Durham City-County Planning Department in partnership with the Durham County Main Library, which will also serve as the venue, the program reaches out to inspire and educate the regular citizen. The curious and motivated Durham residents willing to give up just a single Friday evening and one Saturday have until October 11 to send in their applications. The venue located at 300 N. Roxboro St., is strategically set in the heart of Durham, reinforcing the commitment to local accessibility and involvement.
For those unable to attend the upcoming sessions but wishing to remain informed and involved in Durham's planning endeavors, alternatives such as the Planning Public Notification Service and the ENGAGEDurham Newsletter are recommended. More details about the Durham Planning Academy, including how to apply, can be found on the City of Durham dedicated webpage.
