Durham police have apprehended nine individuals following the spotting of a stolen vehicle at a local hotel, potentially unraveling a web of illegal activity involving firearms and vehicle thefts. According to WRAL, officers identified a stolen vehicle in the parking lot of a hotel on Page Road, leading to a deeper investigation that connected several suspects to a single hotel room.
The presence of the stolen vehicle, which had been previously involved in a hit-and-run incident where shots were fired, initiated police surveillance and subsequent action. Through their efforts, authorities obtained a search warrant and detained eight individuals inside the hotel room and one more outside, explained ABC11. The detention included four adults, and five juveniles, two of the adults, Maurice Keys, 19, and Jahquez Brown, 20, now face charges connected to possession of a firearm by a felon and contributing to the delinquency of minors.
A sweep of the scene yielded nine handguns in total, with two confirmed as stolen. In connection with the initial discovery, a second stolen vehicle was found in the proximity of the hotel, further complicating the breadth of the criminal investigation, as noted by the Durham Police Department's Facebook post.
While some of the juveniles were processed based on existing secure custody orders, the fourth received a failure-to-appear petition, and the department notes that additional charges are pending. Individuals with knowledge about this incident are being encouraged by law enforcement to contact Corporal M. Henderson, or to leave an anonymous tip via CrimeStoppers, which offers cash rewards for information leading to felony arrests.
