Tragedy struck on Cherry Street in East Greenville this past weekend when a man, armed with a machete and a hatchet, was fatally shot by police following a standoff. Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office stated that the incident commenced just after 8 p.m. on Saturday, following a call to 911 by an 18-year-old female alleging a physical assault. NBC Philadelphia reports that multiple police agencies responded, encountering a 55-year-old man who had barricaded himself in the home's basement.
After extended negotiations with the barricaded suspect failed to yield any results, officials made "numerous attempts to negotiate," as stated in a release from the DA's office obtained by NBC Philadelphia. As the standoff spilled into the late night, police breached the basement door around 11:30 p.m. and were met with an aggressive move from the suspect, who, the FOX 29 account notes, charged at them whilst refusing to relinquish his weapons.
The escalation led to an attempted tasering that failed to subdue the man, prompting an Upper Perkiomen Township Police Department officer to discharge his firearm. "Steele's office said the man charged at officers and an officer of the Upper Perkiomen Township Police Department discharged his firearm, striking the man," as reported by NBC Philadelphia. The man was pronounced dead at the scene just past midnight.
The fallout of this fatal shooting has resonated throughout the quiet community, with neighbors expressing their dismay and shock. "He was friendly, very friendly, it was a sad turn of events," Stephanie Young, a neighbor, told FOX 29 in an interview reflecting the collective sentiment of those living nearby. Authorities have not yet released the names of the deceased man or the involved officer, as the investigation remains active. The Montgomery County DA's office is asking anyone with information to come forward and contact Montgomery County Detectives at 610-278-3368, a request also stated in the coverage from CBS News Philadelphia.
