Citizens of Elgin and La Grange now have a new reason to skip the car keys and opt for public transportation. An on-demand bus service, CARTS NOW, rolled out Tuesday offering rides within city limits, aiming to simplify transit in these rural areas. Elgin and La Grange's newest addition to public conveyance is part of a service expansion by the Capital Area Rural Transportation System (CARTS), as per reports by KXAN.
In a bid to immediately attract passengers, the service is touted to provide rides free of cost for its first 90 days. Those looking to utilize the service can look forward to being picked up within about 15 minutes of booking, ensuring a nimble and responsive transport option, confirmed by CARTS officials. "We just want to provide the best service that we can to the rural communities," Dana Platt, the community engagement director for CARTS, told FOX 7 Austin. After the initial promotional period, the service will be available for $2 one way, with discounted fares for seniors and people with disabilities.
Ribbon-cutting ceremonies are set to mark the official welcome for the service in both cities, in collaboration with the La Grange Chamber of Commerce on Sept. 10 and the Elgin Chamber of Commerce on Sept. 13. Besides the daily commute, the metro connector in Elgin also bridges downtown Elgin with downtown Austin, facilitating an essential link for those working in the capital, detailed by KXAN.
Local businesses are looking to the new service to drive more foot traffic to downtown areas. Stephanie Ross, owner of The Painted Raven in Elgin, expressed her optimism, saying, "Absolutely, anything would be greatly appreciated and utilized," in an interview with FOX 7 Austin. With the operational hours set between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays, and rides to begin as a complementary service before becoming a paid amenity, the initiative stands to potentially reshape the local transit landscape.
Further details on the CARTS NOW service and other transit options like the Interurban Coach and Country Bus are available online for those seeking more information on the scope and scale of public transportation tailored for these non-urbanized community hubs, as KXAN reports. The expansion of CARTS NOW into Elgin and La Grange is a significant stride toward equal access to reliable transportation for Central Texas's rural residents.
