The importance of smoke alarms is once again thrust into the public consciousness with the Euless Fire Department's announcement of this year's Fire Prevention Week theme: "Smoke alarms: make them work for you!" Partnering with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the campaign starting October 6 aims to educate on the life-saving potential of smoke alarms, provided they are working. As the NFPA has been the official sponsor for more than a century, the message is clear: functional smoke alarms drastically reduce the risk of fatality in home fires.

According to a news release from the Euless Fire Department, the data is stark, in homes without any working smoke alarms the majority of U.S home fire deaths occur. Citing NFPA's statistics, roughly three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. As per the City of Euless, NFPA’s Vice President of Outreach and Advocacy, Lorraine Carli emphasizes, "Smoke alarms can make a life-saving difference in a home fire, but they have to be working in order to deliver the needed protection."

The solution seems straightforward: install smoke alarms in each bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of the home, including the basement. The Fire Prevention Week campaign also reminds residents to consider the needs of those with sensory or physical disabilities when selecting alarms. Regular monthly tests by pressing the test button are necessary, and smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years or if they fail to respond when tested.

The Euless Fire Department offers a helping hand to those unsure about their smoke alarms, proposing to visit homes for evaluations and even installing alarms free of charge for those in financial need as per the City of Euless. Homeowners are encouraged to fill out the Smoke Alarm Request online form, to increase proactive safety measures. The sobering reminder that four out of five U.S. fire deaths occur at home each year underscores the campaign's urgency.
