A man is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Douglas County after deputies responded to a call from a suicidal individual. The incident occurred around 6:20 p.m. on Saturday at a residence located on the 12000 block of Roosevelt Lane, as reported by Denver7. According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, no deputies were injured during the encounter.
The situation escalated after crisis negotiators, who tried to coax the man outside, heard a gunshot from within the home. As Denver7 detailed, officers were at first called to the scene by the man claiming he was contemplating suicide. Despite efforts by negotiators, the man emerged from his residence armed with a handgun. In unincorporated Douglas County, deputies and Lone Tree police arrived at his house following the call.
As obtained by CBS News Colorado, Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly mentioned that the man, who has not yet been identified publicly, was fatally shot after pointing a gun at the deputies. This came after negotiators continued to engage with him, attempting to de-escalate the situation.
Sheriff Weekly also commented on the training of the responders, stating, "We had the right people here, the community response team officers." Furthermore, as heard a single gunshot inside the home before the man came outside, the officers, Weekly added, "This is what they do, to de-escalate situations," as reported by KDVR. The officers involved in the shooting are now on administrative leave until the 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team completes an investigation.
No other residents were injured in the incident, and the man was declared dead at the hospital following the altercation. The unfolding of this tragic event underscores the volatile mix of mental health crises and law enforcement interventions that can sometimes lead to deadly outcomes.
