Tragedy struck Flint, Michigan, as a wedding day celebration turned into a grim affair with the death of a groomsman, reportedly hit by an SUV driven by the groom himself. According to WWJ Newsradio, authorities were summoned to Hamilton Avenue and Lewis Street around 8 p.m. on August 30 to attend to a pedestrian who had sustained severe injuries. There, they discovered 29-year-old Terry Lewis Taylor Jr., who was later pronounced dead at Hurley Medical Center.
The Flint Police Department reported that Taylor had been a groomsman in the wedding of 22-year-old James Shirah earlier that day. An altercation between the two ensued, which tragically resulted in Shirah hitting Taylor with an SUV at high speed. Shirah has been charged with second-degree murder and is held without bond, while his bride, 21-year-old Savahna Collier, faces charges as an accessory after the fact to a felony and her bond was set at $4,000, as detailed in the department’s Facebook post.
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton expressing his disbelief over the case's extraordinary nature. "I've never seen anything quite like this," Leyton told AP News. "I’ve seen people running over other people but not so soon after a wedding." Leyton further disclosed that the argument occurred at a home where the wedding celebration continued after the ceremony, which took place at a local pizzeria.
Complicating the investigation, Shirah and Collier reportedly did not report to police until the following day. While Shirah is currently incarcerated, Collier posted her bond and was released, as reported by AP News.
