The bridge at Atkins Creek on FM 1097 faced severe damage after heavy rains in July, prompting an immediate response from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). In pursuit of mending the partial collapse, the Houston Chronicle reports that the road will see temporary closures from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Sept. 27 and again on Oct. 4 to complete the necessary repair work.

County Judge Mark Keough was reported by the Houston Chronicle expressing his admiration for TxDOT's swift action, "I’m amazed at the work that TxDOT and the contractors have been able to complete in such a short period of time." The road, which is essential for residents traveling between Montgomery and Interstate 45, was reopened on August 6, but caution is still urged as the restoration is not yet fully complete.

After enduring over 4 inches of rainfall on July 23 that caused the road's girding earth to wash away, the swift action by TxDOT was not only necessary but lifesaving. A game warden from the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife, who noticed the failing structure, magnified the urgency. "Thank goodness it was still daylight at the time," Precinct 1 Commissioner Robert Walker said in a statement obtained by the Houston Chronicle. The road was just starting to unravel, with the guardrail precariously dangling.

In light of the repairs, both repair efforts and the initial damage were taken seriously by local authorities and state officials. Erosion, an ever-present concern for the area, had previously prompted actions with TxDOT records showing about 1,700 feet of the creek's encroachment since 2016 and additional shoring up work carried out south of the bridge in 2020, according to Community Impact. Workers are expected to return this week, with Keough explaining "The workers are taking a much-needed day off and will return this week to complete shoring up the surrounding areas with concrete to prevent any further erosion to the bridge area. Please continue to be cautious in the area as the workers return to finish their work."
