A 35-year-old Granbury man was handed a substantial 50-year federal prison sentence for the heinous acts of sexually exploiting a young child and capturing it on video. Stephen Wayne Ashley, Jr. received this sentence on Thursday, announced by Leigha Simonton, the U.S. Attorney's Office.

In a statement obtained by the U.S. Department of Justice, Simonton's office detailed that Ashley had pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count of sexual exploitation of a child and one count of possession of child pornography. U.S. District Judge Mark Pittman imposed the sentence, which constitutes a total of 600 months—360 for sexual exploitation and 240 for possession of child pornography to run consecutively. Additionally, Ashley is ordered to register as a sex offender and pay a sum of $13,500 in restitution to several victims.

The initial tip-off that led to this case developed from an investigation by the New South Wales Police in Australia. They were examining an individual who shared links containing child pornography on X. One of those links, which possessed over 1,600 files that were mostly child pornography, was traced back to Ashley.

As mentioned on the Department of Justice website, documents from the court divulge that Homeland Security Investigations' Dallas Field Office, with the assistance of the New South Wales Police and the Hood County District Attorney’s Office, conducted the investigation that led to Ashley’s arrest. Upon executing a search warrant at Mr. Ashley’s residence on March 11, agents discovered a hidden folder on his phone containing disturbing videos of the individual molesting a 9-year-old girl.

After his apprehension and subsequent rights given through the Miranda warning, Mr. Ashley admitted to officers that his filming of the child had started when she was just seven years old and that it continued for years. Jesse Woods, the Assistant Special Agent in Charge of HSI Dallas, expressed his appreciation for the collective efforts of all law enforcement partners involved in bringing Ashley to justice.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Aisha Saleem prosecuted the case. Ashley’s protracted sentence underscores the severity of his crimes and represents a grave warning to others who may perpetrate similar offenses.
