A convenience store in West Los Angeles was the scene of a chaotic event on Friday night as about 50 juveniles on bicycles descended upon a 7-Eleven, making off with merchandise and leaving disarray in their wake. According to the Los Angeles Police Department and reported by KTLA, officers received a call around 7:25 p.m. regarding the incident at the 8500 block of W Olympic Boulevard, located near the Beverly Hills border.
The suspects, described as being between 12 and 15 years old, had fled the scene before LAPD’s arrival, CBS Los Angeles reports. Witnesses described the moment as a sudden influx of juveniles entering the store, some with masks, a sight that has become increasingly common following similar incidents in recent months. Amidst the confusion of the raid, it was reported by bystanders who saw cars that were passing by as juveniles entered and exited the store, albeit it's unclear precisely how much damage was caused or the total value of items taken.
In a bid to address ongoing property crimes such as this, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a series of 10 bills the previous month, targeted at curbing smash-and-grab robberies and increasing penalties for those involved in organized retail theft and auto crimes. This legislative move, highlighted by NBC Los Angeles, aims to facilitate the prosecution of repeat shoplifters and dismantle professional reselling operations.
These raids are not new to the area, as a group of bike-riding thieves had targeted three different 7-Eleven locations in Hollywood on Aug. 16, with one witness expressing frustration to CBS Los Angeles, that "it's frustrating because it keeps happening." Resident Elan Saghian, shocked by the brazenness of the act, told ABC7, "It was just idiotic, stupid and I'm sure a lot of them will get caught." AIR7 notably captured police apprehending at least one suspect a couple of miles from the store, as the community reels from the repetition of such events.
The LAPD is now reviewing surveillance footage to identify those who participated in the latest 7-Eleven raid. Anyone with information on the incident is urged to come forward and contact the police.
