Residents are advised to take immediate and thorough precautions against these potentially deadly diseases, which, while not transmissible between humans or animals, can infect humans through mosquito bites.
Furthermore, West Nile Virus has been confirmed in a dead trumpeter swan in Kalamazoo County, although, as of yet, no human cases have been identified in the area, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the ever-present threats posed by mosquito-borne diseases, Michigan has seen a 13% increase in WNV cases over the past year according to details from the Kalamazoo County Health & Community Services Department relayed by WWMT.
Officials from the Van Buren/Cass District Health Department have issued a set of guidelines, stressing the importance of protective measures that include the use of EPA-approved insect repellents with DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus, wearing long clothing during peak mosquito activity hours, and eliminating standing water around residences where these insects may breed, according to FOX17's coverage.
