Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale, the tireless advocate of Gallery Furniture's deals and a patron saint of Houston's philanthropic scene, was back on his feet – literally and figuratively – after a health scare that landed him in the hospital. According to the Houston Chronicle, McIngvale was hospitalized over the weekend for a severe case of cellulitis in his leg which briefly muddled his cognitive abilities.
Despite the severity of the condition, which can oftentimes be quite grievous, McIngvale remained committed to his work and the annual Labor Day sale at his store. "We've got huge sales, huge bargains and the best way for me to get well is you buy some furniture," he said Sunday. McIngvale was back at work today, as detailed by the Houston Chronicle.
KHOU 11 reported that McIngvale had initially experienced symptoms suggestive of a stroke, provoking concern among his family, friends, and admirers alike. "I’m OK," he assured reporters following his discharge from the hospital.
Something about the Astrodome's spinning might even catch McIngvale's eye for a longer time than usual, as he has hinted at adopting a slightly less hurried lifestyle in the wake of his recent health scare. "Maybe I’ll take a little more time to watch the Astros," he told KHOU 11. His resilience is as robust as the build of the fine furniture he sells, and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner agrees, stating, "Mack is just incredible...We wish him well" amidst prayers for a rapid recovery.
The widespread concern for McIngvale's well-being was evident as he recounted receiving thousands of text messages from well-wishers. After sharing his personal contact number in a Facebook Live video from his hospital bed, McIngvale said he got 3,500 text messages checking in on him.
