In response to a wave of online and social media threats against schools across Texas, Houston Independent School District (HISD) has heightened campus security measures as a preventative step. A letter from HISD cited by KHOU stated, "Houston ISD is aware of a statewide situation involving reports of online and social media posts suggesting several Texas public schools are targets of violence," and although no direct threats have been confirmed to HISD schools, every potential threat is being taken seriously with investigations led by criminal investigators.
The decision to bolster security, including increased on-campus patrols, comes amidst a string of reports from various Texas districts, where law enforcement and school police are scrutinizing threats and increasing their visibility near educational facilities. According to a letter sent to parents, HISD communicated the district's zero-tolerance policy towards threats, with HISD Police Department liaising closely with state law enforcement to scrutinize these claims, as noted by Chron. Despite an air of uncertainty surrounding the origins of these threats, measures are in effect districtwide.
Further indicating the serious nature of these security concerns, HISD previously investigated social media posts alleging a violent shooting on some campuses, as Hamilton Middle School Principal DeJonnette Childress communicated in messages to the school community, aiming to dissuade fear and provide reassurance for the safety of students and staff alike. Other Texas school districts are not standing by idly; Dallas ISD has rescheduled football games as a safety precaution and Fort Worth ISD has detained a student in connection to one of the threats. The intensified security actions are echoed in Central Texas regions with districts like Llano ISD also opting to enhance law enforcement presence.
These reactions follow a tragic incident in a Georgia high school earlier this month where two students and two teachers were fatally shot.
