A Houston man has been dealt a long-term prison sentence after fatally shooting his wife, according to the Harris County District Attorney's Office. Dakari Jahi Lenear, aged 48, was sentenced to 65 years for the murder of 45-year-old Rhonda Lenear, marking a tragic end to a years-long pattern of domestic violence and abuse.
Details of the 2021 shooting emerged during the trial, painting a chilling picture of the events leading up to Rhonda Lenear's death in her home on Walnut Glen Drive. On a fateful day, Dakari Lenear instructed his children to wait in the family's truck, a move that was shortly followed by Rhonda's attempt to de-escalate the situation as her husband wielded an assault rifle. "Domestic violence, like in this case, can go on for years with abuse and threats of violence,” District Attorney Kim Ogg said in a statement, as noted by the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
Rhonda, an engineer working from home amidst the pandemic, had been recording on her phone when she was murdered, an act that her husband initially claimed as self-defense. However, the recording contradicted his claims, showing no sign of the supposed knife attack he reported. Instead, it captured Rhonda's last words, the names of her children, as she was shot. In a recent trial, Dakarai Lenear opted to plead guilty as proceedings opened, quickly leading to severe sentencing.
Assistant District Attorney Kelly Marshall, who prosecuted the case, noted Rhonda's years-long efforts to maintain her family's cohesion. "Rhonda bravely audio-recorded Lenear as he was holding an assault rifle and telling her that she would be dead by the end of the day," Marshall said, in a statement obtained by Harris County District Attorney's Office. The case concluded with Lenear being mandated to serve at least 30 years before becoming eligible for parole.
