Houston METRO is steering towards a more sustainable future with the integration of electric buses on two crucial routes. As reported by Houston Chronicle, this change is part of the METRO's September service enhancements, which marks the debut of zero-emission electric buses within its full-time fleet. Serving the 402 Bellaire Quickline and the 28 OST - Wayside routes, these electric vehicles signal a shift towards a greener transit initiative. All rides on the 402 Bellaire Quickline will now be powered by electric buses, while the 28 OST - Wayside route will incorporate five electric buses among its current lineup.

With a strong focus on improving the ride for communities that traditionally rely on public transit, the electric buses feature amenities like USB charging ports, three areas for wheelchair securement, and extra spaces tailored for passengers with disabilities. As outlined in a release by METRO, picked up by Click2Houston, these advances are part of a larger strategic push towards bolstering accessibility and bridging environmental justice gaps.

Funded in part by a grant from the Federal Transit Administration, METRO's push to electrify comes within the broader context of over 400 clean-running hybrid buses already in operation. Looking ahead, METRO anticipates a total of 20 electric buses and 14 hydrogen fuel cell electric buses joining the fleet in future years.

"These improvements are an investment in our customers. The new electric buses meet our broader goals of ensuring the system is accessible, equitable, and helps us close environmental justice gaps," METRO Board Chair Elizabeth Gonzalez Brock emphasized in a statement obtained by Houston Chronicle. Echoing her sentiments, the integration of the electric buses represents a significant leap for service reliability, especially for the low-income and minority communities who comprise a substantial share of the ridership on affected routes.

Brock told Click2Houston, “Both routes service some communities that include minority, low-income, and transit-dependent populations. It is so important we provide these customers with an easy and safe choice that they will be excited to ride.”
