An ordinary Friday evening took a violent turn at a Houston shoe store when an act of shoplifting escalated into a confrontation involving a display of indecency and assault, as reported by the Houston Police Department's Robbery Division. According to an official statement published on the division's website, the incident occurred on August 16, around 6:30 pm, when an unidentified male suspect swapped his own shoes for a new pair and exited the store without attempting to pay.
The store, which rests in the 5300 block of W. 34th Street, became the scene of an altercation when the fleeing suspect was approached by a store employee, the suspect responded by exposing himself and then reached for a knife in his backpack, although it is not clear if the knife was brandished, the employee’s efforts to detain the suspect resulted in physical assault before the suspect managed to escape the scene on a bicycle. The Houston Police have provided a description of the suspect who is reported as a Black male of medium build, spotted in an Astros T-shirt, blue jeans, blue shoes, and sunglasses.
Authorities are calling on the public to assist in identifying the individual responsible for what has now been labeled an aggravated robbery. As detailed on the Houston Police Department's Robbery Division website, tips that lead to the charging and/or arrest of any felony suspects may qualify for a cash reward of up to $5,000. To be eligible for this reward and ensure anonymity, tipsters must reach out directly to Crime Stoppers of Houston by calling 713-222-TIPS (8477), submitting tips online at www.crime-stoppers.org, or by using the Crime Stoppers mobile app.
