The Motown Museum, an iconic cultural staple of Detroit, has embarked on its long-anticipated expansion. The $75 million upgrade, which has been steadily accruing funds since 2016, officially marked a significant milestone with the commencement of its most substantive construction phase. This expansion will amplify Motown Museum’s campus with a new 40,000-square-foot addition anticipated to open in summer 2026.
According to CBS News Detroit, Robin Terry, the CEO and chairwoman of the Motown Museum, has highlighted the enthusiasm surrounding the finalized design details and the museum's fundraiser efforts which have neared their goal by reaching $70 million out of the required $75 million. The project will encompass not only a new building but also a café, and immersive, and interactive exhibits aimed at enriching the visitor experience with the Motown legacy.
As construction begins, the museum unveiled renderings of a gold-themed lobby adorned with imagery of Motown legends, designed to create a visceral experience immediately upon entry. "You step into that space and between retail and our theater and these beautiful images and music, you know you have arrived at Motown — that's the goal," Robin Terry told The Detroit News.
Engagement has been a significant aspect of the museum's focus, with the addition of Hitsville NEXT and a new outdoor plaza completed in 2022. The latest plans include nods to Motown's history, such as a cafe in tribute to Lillie Hart, known affectionately as Miss Lily, the Motown family's beloved cook. The museum's campus has already seen the addition of Hitsville NEXT, an educational and creative hub, which was part of the first and second phases of expansion, according to Detroit Free Press.
The future of the expansion incorporates plans for interactive exhibits like "The Motown Atmosphere" and "The Backstage Lounge," creating an auditory haven where visitors can explore every recording in the Motown catalog. Moreover, the project is expected to serve as an embodiment of Detroit's pride and cultural heritage. "With this expansion, I don't think that we realize what this is going to do, not only for the city but for this community here that Motown has supported since its inception," said Levi Stubbs III, son of the late Four Tops lead singer Levi Stubbs and a board member of the museum, as per The Detroit News.
