Negotiations between Florida Blue and Baptist Health are at a critical standstill, with their contract set to expire Monday. This could raise costs and limit healthcare access for nearly 600,000 Floridians. Darnell Smith, Florida Blue’s North Florida market president, noted that over 34,000 members have received care from Baptist in the past three months, emphasizing the potential impact. "There is a fair and reasonable agreement on the table from Florida Blue that would provide Baptist Health with hundreds of millions of dollars over the next several years – yet they continue to demand more," Smith stated, in a statement obtained by Action News Jax.
Baptist Health's response has been one of frustration, with the hospital's board expressing concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on its finances and workforce. "Healthcare inflation has grown 50% faster than what they’ve received from Florida Blue in rate increases since 2016," claimed the board in a Facebook post, suggesting that their financial demands were justified. Amidst the ongoing back-and-forth, Florida Blue proposed a 30-day contract extension, which Baptist Health refused, stating they saw "We cannot see any wisdom in an extension given Florida Blue’s refusal to compromise, yet we remain ready to negotiate any time and any day for a fair agreement by the original deadline," according to Action News Jax and News4Jax.
Florida Blue and Baptist Health are stuck in tough negotiations, and if they don't reach a new contract by Tuesday, many Florida Blue members could lose their in-network rates. Florida Blue suggested a temporary deal for Wolfson Children's Hospital, but Baptist Health rejected it. The outcome could significantly affect patients, "We implore Baptist Health leaders to end the impasse over Wolfson today," said Darnell Smith, seeking a resolution that benefits Florida Blue members, as reported by First Coast News.
