An alarming incident unfolded in Ithaca, Michigan, where a 46-year-old man, who was reportedly "extremely intoxicated and belligerent," was taken into police custody after he allegedly threatened to shoot a woman in the parking lot of the Gratiot County MDHHS, as detailed in a report by MidMichiganNow. The false alarm, dispatched initially as a possible active shooter on Thursday, Sept. 5, triggered a swift and heavy law enforcement response, along with precautionary lockdowns of nearby schools and businesses.
Upon arrival, officers determined that no gun was found on the suspect, contradicting the initial reports of an active shooter. The incident did cause a stir in the community, leading Ithaca Public Schools to enter a "secure mode," where, according to WNEM, the "secure mode" was initiated at 10:35 a.m. and concluded at 10:41 a.m. Police later confirmed that the man did not possess a gun, and the arrest occurred without any further incident. The situation, which initially seemed dire, was quickly controlled.
Further investigation by police into the matter, including video review from within the MDHHS building, corroborated the absence of a weapon, with Gratiot County Sheriff Michael Morris confirming, "he did threaten a person in the parking lot verbally that he was going to shoot her," as WNEM reports. The woman who was threatened brought the intimidating encounter to the attention of the state office staff soon afterward, initiating the call to authorities.
Currently detained in the Gratiot County Jail, the man faces charges of drunk and disorderly conduct, and the Gratiot County Prosecutor's Office is being consulted for potentially additional charges.
