Hawaiʻi Island police have slapped a Kailua-Kona man with charges relating to a burglary and multiple theft offenses. The man, identified as 34-year-old Kelvin Malakaua, allegedly engaged in a crime spree that targeted several homes in his own neighborhood on September 4.

According to Nixle's report, the series of events started in the early morning hours when a woman's surveillance system caught Malakaua entering and rummaging through her garage. Not long after, a man in the same block reported a suspicious figure in his backyard via his own video surveillance. That figure, too, was determined to be Malakaua, who had absconded with canopy tent piping. The items were later found at the suspect's family home and returned.

The burglaries and thefts unfolded in the 74-5100 block of Haleolono Place, where Malakaua also resides. Following a search warrant executed on the suspect's white Nissan Altima—the getaway vehicle seen in the video surveillance—police uncovered a Milwaukee brand LED Flood Light, Milwaukee brand battery and a case of Gatorade that were among the reported stolen items.

When the cases seemed to converge, detectives promptly arrested Malakaua, with burglary and theft charges following after a consultation with the County Prosecutor's office. The charges include burglary in a 1st degree and two counts of theft in the 3rd degree, pushing bail to a steep $56,000.00. Anyone who might offer further insights into these incidents is encouraged to get in touch with Detective Len Hamakado, as the investigation continues.
