
Keith Hopkins, a seasoned member of the Mesquite Fire Department with 25 years of service, is set to take the helm as the new Fire Chief starting October 7, 2024, the City of Mesquite announced. Responsible for a department of 244 firefighters across seven stations, Hopkins will be overseeing a team that has already responded to close to 16,000 calls for service this year, showcasing the department's vital role in public safety.
City Manager Cliff Keheley praised Hopkins' leadership skills, saying, "Keith has routinely shown exceptional leadership abilities in every position he has held," and expressed confidence in Hopkins' capabilities to lead the Fire Department and serve the community, Hopkins, who initially joined the force in 1999, has risen through the ranks with various roles such as Firefighter, Driver/Engineer, and Captain over Station No. 5, most recently serving as a Battalion Chief where he's been managing Inspection, Investigation, and Public Education within the department, as per the City of Mesquite.
In a statement reflecting on his appointment, Hopkins told the City of Mesquite, "It is a tremendous honor to have the opportunity to serve as Chief," he added, emphasizing his pride in the department's recognized tradition of excellence and his eagerness to guide the team forward. His dedication has been acknowledged previously through awards such as the 2015 Fire Officer of the Year and the 2007 Firefighter of the Year honors.
