On Sunday morning in downtown Las Vegas, the streets were filled with bright orange as the community came together for the Vegas Strong 5K. This event honors the lives affected by the 2017 mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival. Thousands participated to remember the victims, as well as the survivors and first responders. As reported by News 3 LV, the event's proceeds were pledged in full to the 1 October Victim's Fund, along with scholarships and the Healing Garden, ensuring ongoing support for those affected by the tragedy.
The streets bore the weight of a community's heartache, yet the atmosphere, as described by a Boulder City resident and participant Beth Tripp in a statement obtained by 8 News Now, was one of unity and resilience. "We're not all just about glitz and glamor and sin," she explained, "We're about a close-knit community that comes together."
60 people's lives were claimed in the shooting, with hundreds more injured. The 5K event served as a precursor to upcoming remembrance activities, including a sunrise ceremony to be held by Clark County and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, as well as an evening event at the Las Vegas Community Healing Garden. There, the names of each victim will be read, marked by the toll of a bell and the light of a candle, according to information provided by News 3 LV.
The sense of strength and solidarity was echoed by Las Vegas resident Chris Haywood, who told 8 News Now, "We're strong, we stand together." This sentiment resonates clearly with the community's ongoing efforts to not just rebuild, but to also retain a communal consciousness of the tragedy. Tripp said. "This just doesn’t go away. This is not a blip on a history page. We have to keep it alive here for Las Vegas to continue going."
