Residents across the Las Vegas area should brace themselves for a breezy and cooler start to the week, as forecasted by the National Weather Service in Las Vegas. According to their latest Area Forecast Discussion, a significant low-pressure system is making its way slowly across California and Nevada, gearing up to deliver gusty south-to-southwest winds and a notable dip in temperatures.

Wind advisories remain in place with widespread gusts expected to reach 35 to 45 mph over much of the region today. Although, initially labeled as a low-end wind event, occasional gusts over 40 mph are anticipated at wind-prone sites, potentially persisting over parts of northern Bernardino County into the late evening and overnight hours. The NWS warns that the mentioned wind speeds are anticipated to escalate late morning through the afternoon before tapering off in the evening.

In addition to the wind, Esmeralda County could see localized showers and thunderstorms, especially in the morning. The NWS has flagged the potential for localized rainfall amounts of 0.50-0.75 inches over northern Esmeralda County between 12Z and 18Z. Even with the threat not being widespread enough to require a Flash Flood Watch, it still bears monitoring. Light snowfall is also expected above 9000 feet in the Sierra and White Mountains, although travel impacts are not anticipated in the zones managed by the NWS.

Looking ahead, a brief respite in the winds will follow on Tuesday, with temperatures starting in the 50s and 60s and peaking in the 80s across the Mojave Desert, about 10-15 degrees below normal. Another low-pressure system is set to arrive midweek, maintaining cooler temperatures and bringing another chance for precipitation over the southern Great Basin. As the weekend approaches, a shift in the pattern is expected to usher in rising heights and near-average temperatures.

The National Weather Service also points out that aviation conditions at Harry Reid International Airport will include occasional southwesterly gusts of 15 to 20 knots, with an increase to 25 to 35 knots expected around sunrise, continuing through sunset. While gusts could reach up to 40 knots, the probability of such occurrences is low. As the week progresses, wind conditions are predicted to normalize by early Tuesday morning. Meanwhile, hazy skies due to the southern California wildfires may continue to pose visibility concerns, though impacts on visibility are predicted to remain above 6 SM.

Local spotter engagement is encouraged, with the NWS calling on community participants to report significant weather conditions or impacts through standard operating procedures. Residents and visitors should prepare for changing conditions and follow safety advisories.
