The City of Long Beach has implemented a pilot program aimed at tackling the prevalent issue of used mattress disposal. According to a press release from the city, a 24/7 drop-off site, located at 970 W. Chester Pl., has been designated for residents to bring their used mattresses for recycling. Until October 29, 2024, this initiative will give Long Beach inhabitants the convenience of disposing of their mattresses at any time, thereby supporting sustainability, and reducing the illegal dumping that burdens the landscape and municipal resources.

The program launched by the Public Works Department of Long Beach goes beyond the once conventional methods, providing an opportunity "to responsibly dispose of their used mattresses," as Mayor Rex Richardson said in a statement. He emphasized that this initiative would help in reducing waste and making a positive environmental impact. The city hopes to streamline the collection process and mitigate unlawful dumping by making the drop-off service available throughout both the day and night. As an additional channel for recycling, this pilot stands alongside the monthly events hosted by Public Works and the Mattress Recycling Council’s Bye Bye Mattress program.

While the monthly events have already contributed significantly to the city's environmental initiatives, recycling over 458 mattresses since April 2023, the 24/7 service seeks to further this effort. At the dedicated recycling facility, the mattresses will be broken down into their recyclable components — steel, foam, fiber, and wood. Noteworthy is that over 75 percent of a mattress's components can be repurposed, highlighting the significant impact this recycling can have.

With an estimated 18,000 mattresses being illegally discarded in Long Beach every year, the strain on the city's maintenance resources and the resultant public blight is a serious issue. Eric Lopez, Director of Public Works expressed optimism about making the collection more efficient with the new program, saying "We are hopeful that this free pilot program will help make collection of mattresses more efficient while reducing dumped items in our City." Ultimately, upon the pilot's conclusion, the success of the 24/7 drop-off initiative will be evaluated to determine its future.
