In a move toward transparency and collaboration, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has released a summary report that captures the sentiments and priorities of a diverse array of Los Angeles stakeholders regarding their search for a new Chief of Police; the compilation followed Bass’s extensive consultations with hundreds of LAPD officers, community leaders, business entrepreneurs, and city residents, as reported by the Office of the Mayor of Los Angeles.
In her quest to ensure the process is inclusive, Mayor Bass not only met with patrol officers and divisional command staff but also with specialized groups including the Law Enforcement Association of Asian Pacific-Islanders, Hispanic American Command Officers Association, and others contributing their visions "It is vital to me that the opinions of rank and file officers as well as community leaders are front and center in this search," Mayor Bass emphasized, signaling a responsive approach to policy-making, the information, Bass asserts, will be used to guide both the ongoing search and future reforms aimed to increase safety and support for officers.
Ongoing dialogues with community figureheads, at the heart of the Mayor’s efforts, entailed discussions with civil rights organizations, faith-based entities, crime survivors, and various violence intervention groups, with notable contributions from CHIRLA, AAPI Equity Alliance, and the Coalition for a Better Los Angeles, thus structuring a variegated framework that echoes the city’s multifaceted concerns and aspirations, as per the Office of the Mayor of Los Angeles.
Adding to the breadth of the consultations, Mayor Bass cast a wide net, gathering input from Los Angeles's business community, from the local economic organizations to the entrepreneurs driving the city's economic pulse, interactions included the Los Angeles County Business Federation and Hollywood Chamber of Commerce among others, the input from this sector reflecting their stake in the city's fabric of law and order.
