Los Angeles is under an Excessive Heat Warning, and Mayor Karen Bass has responded by initiating full citywide coordination to help residents keep cool, as per the Mayor's Office announcement. The heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service is expected to last through Monday evening, compelling the city to extend its cooling resources.
With temperatures continuing to soar, augmented cooling centers have been opened across Los Angeles and will remain operational through September 9. Offering respite are facilities such as the Fred Roberts Recreation Center and Mid Valley Senior Center, which, are designed to be accessible to all, including people with disabilities and others with access and functional needs. For a full list of the locations and operational hours, residents can visit the Recreation and Parks website or call 3-1-1 from within L.A. City limits for more information.
Additionally, Mayor Bass's Office of Housing and Homelessness is currently providing hotel vouchers for unhoused citizens through the LAHSA program, with outreach already underway to connect these lifesaving resources with those in need. Skid Row is seeing climate stations offering cold beverages, shade, and seating to help the community keep temperatures at bay at several locations, including Towne St., San Pedro St., and 5th and Maple, according to the official release.
In the face of extreme temperatures, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power has taken steps to minimize power outages, with crews on standby ready to address any electrical issues. Recognizing the heightened risks of heat exposure, the city’s “Heat Relief 4 LA” campaign works multilingually to inform residents about heat safety practices. The Los Angeles Department of Animal Services also contributes to this mission, advising pet owners on how to keep their furry companions safe during extreme temperatures, including tips like avoiding hot surfaces and never leaving pets in vehicles.
The City's effort is not only about immediate relief but also includes proactive measures to ensure the well-being of its residents and pets amidst this blistering heatwave. Residents are encouraged to download the Cool Spots L.A. app for information on cooling amenities and to sign up for weather alerts via NotifyLA.org. The community is advised to stay hydrated, seek shade, and limit exposure to the sun during peak hours, while being vigilant for signs of heat-related illnesses. For more safety tips, including in multiple languages, and to know what steps to take in the event of a power outage, the public can visit the respective department websites linked in the Mayor's Office press release.
