A recent outbreak of violence in Grand Rapids has resulted in a man's death, following a shooting incident that took place on Turner Avenue and 10th Street NW last Friday. The victim, who has not been named by authorities, succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday after being in critical condition, as confirmed by the Grand Rapids Police Department.
The Kent County Medical Examiner has officially ruled the incident a homicide. According to FOX 17, the victim was driving at the time of the shooting, and it is believed the shots were fired from another vehicle. The Grand Rapids Police have yet to describe the suspect or their vehicle and are seeking information from the public.
Detectives are investigating what WOODTV indicates might be a crime related to drugs, given the area's usual calm and the secluded nature of the shooting location. GRPD Chief Eric Winstrom noted, "The potential being that this was the location chosen by individuals to meet up for some sort of illicit activity. It’s something that we’re looking into and it’s a possibility."
Despite the quiet character of the neighborhood, violence shattered the semblance of safety when the victim's car was targeted in broad daylight, and then crashed. "I would say it is pretty brazen," Winstrom said in a statement obtained by WZZM 13. "One of my biggest fears is we get a random shooting... That doesn't appear to be the case here." Winstrom further mentioned that the shooting appeared to be an incident where the victim and shooter likely knew each other, suggesting a targeted attack rather than a random act of violence.
Grand Rapids Police Department and Silent Observer are calling for anyone with information to step forward and assist in the ongoing investigation. Witnesses or individuals with knowledge about the shooting can reach GRPD at (616) 456-3380 or opt to stay anonymous by contacting Silent Observer at (616) 774-2345.
