A man in his 30s is now in custody after a morning incident that escalated to an exchange of gunfire with police officers in Inkster, Michigan. Shots were reported to have been fired at police near the LeMoyne Gardens apartments on Pine Street off Middlebelt Road, prompting a substantial law enforcement response. Additional details from WWJ Newsradio 950's Charlie Langton revealed that "Police had to escort kids to the buses, and people were told to stay inside their homes while the cops searched for this gunman."
The encounter initially unfolded around 6 a.m., when the suspect purportedly discharged his firearm at officers near an apartment complex located at the junction of Henry Ruff and Andover, between Michigan Avenue and Van Born. To quickly and securely detain the suspect, a large-scale operation was conducted, involving not only the Inkster Police Department but also the Michigan State Police and several other law enforcement agencies, as reported by FOX 2 Detroit.
Amidst the tense atmosphere, local children required a police escort to reach their school transportation. The situation was brought to a close before 9 a.m. with the suspect's apprehension. As indicated by Inkster officials, there were fortunately no injuries reported in relation to the gunfire.
This same individual is believed to be the man who previously threatened to shoot at police approximately a year ago. His identity has not been disclosed as investigations are still ongoing. Meanwhile, WXYZ reported that prior to the arrest, the suspect had fled on foot leading to an intense search involving a drone and a canine unit. The police perimeter extended to areas including Henry Ruff, Annapolis, Carlysle, and Fox during the search.
