The closure, which took place on Sunday, September 1, was confirmed by a statement posted on the restaurant's door and implemented after nearly eight years of operation in the space that also houses the offices of The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press.
According to The Detroit News, the statement from Maru Sushi expressed gratitude toward its clientele: "We want to say from the bottom of our hearts: thank you. Thank you for every meal you’ve spent with us, for every reunion, birthday or anniversary you’ve celebrated with us. For every positive review, to-go order, photo and kind word we’ve received from you for the past 7 ½ years.” However, fans of Maru's firecracker shrimp or crouching tiger rolls can find solace in that the sushi chain plans to quickly open a new location in Brighton in 2025.
The restaurant, known for its broader menu that boasted over a dozen sushi roll options, firecracker shrimp, and a distinctive ginger dressing, had become a popular choice for both locals and professionals in the downtown Detroit area, as Detroit Free Press reported.
Maru Sushi's closing leaves a notable vacancy in the Federal Reserve Building, a heritage structure. However, the company maintains its presence in Michigan with other locations that continue to serve customers in East Lansing, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Midland. The closure in Detroit does not appear to hinder the brand's expansion, as emphasized by a message on their website uncovered by Detroit Free Press: "We look forward to the opening of Maru Sushi in Brighton coming in 2025!" suggests a commitment to growth and customer service.
