An early Saturday morning collision involving a Mecklenburg County Sheriff's deputy and another vehicle was reported in uptown Charlotte. Deputy L. Blackwelder was involved in the accident, which occurred around 6:50 a.m. at the intersection of W. 12th Street and N. Church Street, just off I-277, stated the sheriff's office via WBTV.
According to details released by the sheriff's department, the incident was initiated when the other driver allegedly ran a red light, subsequently causing the deputy's vehicle to collide with theirs. Deputy Blackwelder was quickly taken to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center by MEDIC. As per a statement obtained by WCNC, the deputy was reported to be home and recovering by early Saturday evening.
In response to the incident, Sheriff Gary McFadden expressed his sentiments on Deputy Blackwelder's current condition and his anticipation for the deputy's eventual return to duty. "We are thankful that Deputy Blackwelder is now safely home, resting and recovering," McFadden said. "I’d like to extend my sincere gratitude to Medic for their prompt response. We look forward to Deputy Blackwelder’s return to serving our community once he has fully recovered," he explained in a statement cited by QC News.
The collision involving Deputy Blackwelder turned out was not the only one to unsettle the streets of Charlotte on that day. Further incidents reported included a tragic accident around noon on Sharon View Road, resulting in a juvenile's death and four others to be seriously injured. Later, around 2:30 p.m., an additional wreck on I-85 left one driver and five juveniles with minor injuries. This data threads a narrative of a day marred by vehicular mishaps throughout the city. The conditions of the individuals involved in these subsequent accidents were not detailed in the reports.
