Motorists in Michigan have experienced a noticeable increase in fuel costs with an average rise of 10 cents per gallon for regular unleaded gas over the past week. The state-wide average price is now $3.47 per gallon, according to numbers from AAA - The Auto Club Group. This current price is 5 cents higher than last month, yet motorists are seeing an overall 21-cent per gallon savings compared to prices at this time one year ago, as reported by The Detroit News.
In a similar trend, Metro Detroit's gas prices are closely aligned with the state's averages, standing at $3.48 per gallon, a change that’s about 10 cents more than last week, reported by CBS Detroit. Despite the weekly increase, these prices are 22 cents cheaper than the figures reported in the same period the previous year. "Michigan drivers continue to see higher gas prices across the state," AAA spokesperson Adrienne Woodland stated.
Factors affecting these fluctuations include changes in gas demand, which rose from 8.77 million to 9.2 million barrels per day, accompanied by a slight dip in total domestic gasoline stocks from 221.6 million barrels to 220.1 million, as per data from the Energy Information Administration. Meanwhile, gasoline production has seen an uptick, with an average output of 9.8 million barrels daily.
Geographic variations in price are also evident within the state. Detroit Free Press highlights that the most expensive gas price averages can be found in Jackson ($3.52), Ann Arbor ($3.51), and Lansing ($3.49). Conversely, the most affordable averages are in Marquette ($3.38), Benton Harbor ($3.41), and Traverse City ($3.46). Meanwhile, the higher demand and production dynamics allude to more complex market forces at play.
With rising prices, CBS Detroit shares several recommendations from AAA on how to economize on fuel. Tips include consolidating errands to reduce driving time, comparing gas prices in the area, paying with cash to avoid possible extra charges associated with credit card payments, removing unnecessary weight from vehicles, and engaging in conservative driving to improve fuel economy. Additionally, enrolling in saving programs such as Shell's Fuel Rewards can offer a 5-cent per gallon discount at corresponding stations for AAA Members.
