A Mountain View town council member has been formally charged following an incident involving the shooting of a teenager, as per the First Judicial District Attorney Alexis King. Brent Metz, 38, faces charges of second-degree assault, menacing, and illegal discharge of a firearm, as reported by KDVR.

On September 10, deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of trespassers at a Conifer residence. The female homeowner, who is Metz's girlfriend, called him about the trespassers. Metz arrived at the scene while the teens were looking for a spot to take a homecoming photo. According to The Denver Post, Metz drove up beside the victim's vehicle, obstructed their departure, and emerged with a gun. A shot went off, injuring the 17-year-old driver in the face. Metz reportedly said, “Oh (expletive), my gun went off,” and then attempted to provide medical assistance.

The Denver Post reported that according to the affidavit, Metz blocked the teens' vehicle, and then, while holding a handgun, it accidentally went off, shooting through the windshield and hitting the victim. After the incident, the teen told authorities that he believed Metz didn't intentionally shoot him, but there was a moment when he thought he might die.

The district attorney's office indicated, according to arrest records from the incident obtained by the Denver Gazette, that there's no evidence to suggest Metz acted "with extreme indifference." Metz, who has sat on the council since at least 2021, is due in court for a hearing regarding the charges where more details of the case are expected to emerge.
