A fire erupted within a commercial building in Muskegon on Wednesday afternoon, leaving behind heavy damage but no injuries, as reported by multiple sources. The Muskegon Fire Department was dispatched to the 1600 block of Messler Street to confront the blaze, which rapidly escalated, producing thick black smoke attributed to the building's use as a semi-truck and trailer maintenance shop, according to FOX 17.
The incident occurred when a man was welding and using a cutting torch when he noticed the wall behind him catch fire and managed to evacuate without injuries, Deputy Director of Fire Jay Paulson informed. Complications arose due to damaged high voltage power lines, which caused delays in applying water to the fire. Neighbors to a structure reported an explosion, with resident Quentin recounting to WZZM 13, "It was an explosion that happened right there across the street, and everything was engulfed in flames. Before I knew it, I had picked up my phone. I was like, let me get this on Facebook, because this building's been there for a long time. It's kind of a tragedy to watch it go."
Firefighters from Muskegon, joined by crews from Muskegon Heights and Norton Shores, worked together to control the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby vehicles and structures. This multi-department effort was highlighted by the Muskegon Professional Firefighters – IAFF Local 370 in a Facebook post, which was referenced in an MLive report. The fire led to a partial collapse of the building and the off-gassing of numerous compressed gas cylinders, complicating the containment efforts.
Despite the severity of the fire, the community members showed resilience and a spirit of helpfulness. Timothy Myer, a witness who attempted to aid at the scene, expressed his relief that no one was harmed, saying in a statement obtained by FOX 17, "I just thank God for allowing that guy to get out safe, and I hope he's all right."
Meanwhile, Quentin expressed concern for the community's loss, telling WZZM 13, "I hope they can get the building right back to running, and get it back up for the community because there's no telling what they use that building for. I see moving trucks, semi trucks come out through there, but it's such a tragic watch this building go." The fire marshal has started an investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire, with cleanup operations ongoing.
