Residents of Windsor Park, a North Las Vegas neighborhood struggling with sinking homes, now face further uncertainty due to a proposed reallocation of funds meant for their reconstruction. Governor Joe Lombardo's administration has suggested moving $25 million of the $37 million originally designated for the Windsor Park project to other housing initiatives. This redirection is due to concerns that the funds will not be expended by the December 31, 2026, deadline set by federal guidelines, according to KTNV.
An emergency meeting was convened within the walls of the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, where residents expressed dismay and frustration. Webster Davis, a four-decade inhabitant of the sinking neighborhood, articulated a sentiment of profound disappointment and skepticism, "When do we get to live our life our way?" This, as reported by KTNV, reflects the community's desire for stability and self-determination in a changing environment—both physically and figuratively.
In defense of the proposed funding shift, the governor's office insists that by reallocating the federal funds and substituting them with state general funds, Windsor Park will have a more secure financial future free from the looming expiration date of federal dollars. In a statement obtained by FOX5 Vegas, a spokesperson for Gov. Lombardo's office asserted, "This proposal guarantees the future of the Windsor Park community, and any attempts to portray it otherwise are political and disingenuous."
"What guarantees do we have this money will be replaced?" Davis told KTNV. Describing his residence, Davis said, "You feel like you are going downhill-- it's slanted. everything is cracking moving,"
The Governor's Chief of Staff is scheduled for a follow-up meeting with the community on October 10. This discussion is likely to be contentious as it addresses not just funding allocation but also the deeper issues of promising and delivering a stable future to a community that has long been on the edge of instability.
