A tragic confrontation at an Apple Valley auto repair shop has left one man dead and another critically wounded. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department reported that the incident occurred around 4 p.m. on September 20, at 13600 Quinnault Road. Frank Portillo, a 31-year-old Hesperia resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, 44-year-old Joshua Augsburger of Apple Valley was rushed to a local hospital, in critical condition.

The suspect, 46-year-old Leon Sanchez of Apple Valley, was armed with a handgun and allegedly opened fire during a disagreement. Witnesses reported hearing Portillo threaten Sanchez shortly before the altercation escalated, leading to the shooting, according to statements obtained by KTLA. Officials say, Sanchez, who was found to have a valid San Bernardino County permit to carry a concealed firearm, was detained without incident though it remains unclear if he has been taken into custody.

The investigation, which has been turned over to detectives with the Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division, is ongoing, as per the SBSD - Headquarters. After the incident, the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office will review the case.
